What is CHS?

CHS stands for Circular Hollow Section. It refers to a length of steel commonly used in building construction, structural and mechanical applications. CHS is also known as Circular Tube or Pipe. Find more about Steel Profiles.

CHS Characteristics

Steel Profile

Circular Hollow Section refers to a type of steel which has a circular shaped cross-section, and is hollow inside. It is often called Circular Tube or Pipe.

Versatility and Strength

These sections are versatile and can be used in many different applications. The main benefit of CHS is its strength and high strenth-to-weight ratio.

Steel pipes do not crack under most impacts and can operate under high pressure. Under excess load CHS will tend to bend rather than break.

CHS Common Uses

Structural Support

    • Columns: widely used as columns in buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their high axial load-bearing capacity makes them ideal for supporting significant vertical loads.
    • Beams: can be used as beams to span openings and support horizontal loads. Their resistance to bending and deflection makes them suitable for various applications.
    • Bracing: commonly used as bracing elements to provide lateral stability to structures, such as in towers, bridges, and offshore platforms.
    • Frames: used to construct structural frames for buildings, bridges, and other structures. Their versatility allows for the creation of various frame configurations.

Other Applications

    • Industrial structures: such as warehouses, factories, and workshops, often for columns, beams, and bracing.
    • Civil engineering projects: including bridges, tunnels, and pipelines, where its strength and durability are essential.
    • Architectural applications: such as decorative elements, handrails, and structural frames for modern buildings.
    • Marine and offshore structures: due to its excellent corrosion resistance and ability to withstand harsh environments.
