What is SHS?

SHS stands for Square Hollow Section. It refers to a type of hollow shape of a piece of steel that has a square cross-section (or Profile). Find more about Steel Profiles. It is often referred to by the more commonly known term “RHS” (however this is not technically correct).

SHS Characteristics

Steel Profile

As the name suggests, SHS has a perfectly square shape, with four equal sides and a hollow centre through the entire length of the steel section.

Versatility and Strength

SHS is incredibly versatile and widely used in various applications. The hollow square shape provides excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making it efficient for many structural applications.

SHS Common Uses

Structural Support

    • Frames: For buildings, bridges, and other structures.
    • Columns: Vertical supports in various constructions.
    • Bracing: Reinforcing structures against lateral loads.

Other Applications

    • Fencing and Gates: Common for residential and commercial applications.
    • Handrails and Balustrades: For safety and aesthetics.
    • Machinery Frames: Used in the construction of various machinery.
    • General Fabrication: Utilised in a wide range of fabricated steel components.
